Q: How can the “pink slime” be called “finely textured lean beef” when what is used is the fat trimmings?
A: The processing for lean finely textured beef removes most of the fat by slightly heating the meat then spinning it in a centrifuge, resulting in a product that is 95 percent lean. When mixed with fattier ground beef it reduces the total fat content of the resulting mixture.
Yard waste pickups
Q: When will Mason City begin picking up yard waste?
A: Pickups have already begun for this year.
The city usually picks up yard waste April through November or until the first snowfall, but began collections early this year because of the warm weather.
Property tax reminder
Q: Does the Globe Gazette regularly print an article when property taxes are due? If so, has it posted an article for it this year?
A: Yes, we remind area residents when property taxes are due. We published an article on the North Iowa page on Tuesday, March 27, reminding North Iowans that property taxes were due this year on Monday, April 2.
Normally half of the annual property taxes are due the end of the month in September and March. Taxpayers got an extra couple of days this half because March 31 fell on a Saturday.
Questions for council
Q: Can members of the audience ask questions during a Mason City Council work session, such as occurred recently?
A: Only if the council chooses to allow it. Usually not.
Selecting contestants
Q: Does “Let’s Make a Deal” and “The Price is Right” pre-pick its contestants?
A: According to various sources, audience members for “The Price is Right” are interviewed before the show is taped and the persons who the producers think would be the most interesting contestants are secretly selected to be called to “Come on down” during the show.
For “Let’s Make a Deal,” a limited number of potential contestants are chosen from those who have tickets to the show and are seated in the contestants section. The show host, Wayne Brady, selects who he will make deals with from the group of potential contestants as the show is being taped.
Private selling
Q: What in real estate is called a private selling?
A: A private sale is selling a property without listing it with a real estate agent or broker. The owner sells it directly to a buyer, often with the services of a real estate attorney to provide guidance and handle the paperwork.
