Cam Janssen Calls Make Gay Joke, Calls Kings ‘Fat Broads You Regret Bangin’
It takes a certain kind of personality to be a tough guy in the NHL, but from both personal experience and from what I’ve heard from many other people, these players typically rank among the most down-to-earth, nicest guys in the league.
It appears as though Cam Janssen might be a little too down to earth, letting the world know his true feelings on several different matters in an interview with a St. Louis radio show earlier this week.
Here’s the New Jersey Devils winger on “The Thom Jeff Show,” which, as far as we can tell, is just an Internet radio show. Considering the language (there’s your warning), we have to imagine this never found the actual airwaves.
On his Devils losing to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup finals:
Host: “The first time I did a fat chick, a buddy picked me up from a party and I was hung over and he goes, ‘Do you realize what you just did?’ … I would imagine it’s something like that. It’s like you had a chance, and then it’s like …”
Janssen: “Damn fat broads, man.”
Host: “So the L.A. Kings are the fat broads?”
Janssen: “They are. They’re the fat broads that you regret bangin’, and I’ve been there and done that.”
On scaring opposing players:
Host: “Are there certain guys that you know you’ve got the mindfuck on them?”
Janssen: [laughter] “Oh, absolutely. Are you kiddin’ me? [more laughter] I love it. And you know what, I respect a lot of the guys and you wanna have people respect you. If you’re a fuckin’ dipshit out there, you’re not going to get any respect and other teams aren’t gonna respect you. And if other teams don’t respect you, then they’re not gonna sign you and it’s just kind of a trickle effect.
“But you wanna be scary. You wanna put the fear of fuckin’ God in people’s eyes, and not just, ‘Oh, I’m gonna beat you up’ — no, ‘I’m gonna catch you with your fuckin’ head down and hurt you because you’re not gonna know I’m comin’, because I know how to hit.’ Fighting guys is one thing because I know, ‘Oh, I won’t fight you. I’ll just turtle.’ Whatever. But if you have the puck and you know how to hit and you can hurt guys with hits like I know how to do, that’s what puts the fear of God into people.”
On trash talk:
Janssen: “There’s some shit-talkin’ that goes down that pisses some people off. There’s a lot of personal shit, man, like, guys know personal shit. … You wanna get in people’s heads to get them off their fuckin’ game and don’t get me wrong, you don’t wanna go too deep with shit because we all have our issues here. Let’s be honest.”
Host: “But if the guy was suckin’ cock four weeks ago, you’re gonna let him know about it?”
Janssen: “Oh, if he’s suckin’ cock, he’s gettin’ his ass kicked.” [laughter]
Give the interviewers credit here: There’s plenty of great content in this interview, including talk about how players might deal with a potential lockout, how players deal with each other and lean on each other during offseason workouts, etc.
But man, talk about crossing the line. At least it’s a real look into the mind of Cam Janssen — and, unfortunately, likely the minds of many other players in the NHL — but sometimes it’s best if this stuff just stays out of public view.
You have to imagine that Patrick Burke, the founder of the You Can Play Project, will be furious with the outward homophobia here. You have to imagine that the New Jersey Devils — the team that just signed Janssen to another one-year contract — will be furious as well. And the NHL? Well, given the ongoing crackdown when it comes to player safety, a player talking openly about injuring other players may not go over so well.
And as for the repuation of Cam Janssen? Well, this will make him much more popular with some … but with most, he’s now a villain.

Thin Resume, Fat Contract: Cashing in on the NHL Free Agent Market – About

The first day of NHL free agency ended with one of the big names finding a new home.
Now we wait and see whether Jason Garrison lives up to his generous new paycheck.
Garrison joins Vancouver on a six-year contract reportedly worth $4.6 million annually.
Not bad for a 27-year-old defenseman who looked like a fringe player 12 months ago.
Garrison has one notable NHL season to his credit: 16 goals and 17 assists for Florida in 2011-12, drawing much of the credit for the Panthers’ successful season.
The last time he hit double figures in goals, he was playing Junior A hockey in 2005.
In an (as always) inflationary market, Garrison’s salary isn’t out of line with what other defensemen are making.
But he better have more where 2011-12 came from.
Canucks fans are not kind to players who fail to meet expectations, as Roberto Luongo well knows.
Our list of 2012 NHL free agent signings includes age, contract length, and total value, based on media reports.

Game 2: The Fat Lady Sings at Bryan Bickell’s Command.

The Blackhawks made history last night for being the first team in NHL history to score tying goals with less than 15 seconds in regulation in consecutive games of one series.
If you missed the game, you missed some seriously assiduous hockey!
Bryan Bickell found the back of Mike Smith’s net with a Powerplay goal in the first period. The Coyotes, whose fans were in white-out mode, were not about to let the Visitors get away with a lead for too long, so they equalized with a Powerplay goal of their own after a questionable call was made against Jonathan Toews. Toews was called for Goalie interference when Mike Smith came out of his crease and initiated contact while Toews was trying to score. Many experts were surprised at such a blatantly obvious bad call.

So it was 1-all and to celebrate the goal, the sound of a Coyote howl was unleashed. I have no problem with the sound of real-life coyotes – it’s cool – but this is no regular howl. If you don’t know, the Coyotes do not have a goal song, but rather an obnoxiously drawn-out, eardrum-raping coyote howl that sounds whenever they score (and maybe I’m imagining but I feel like I heard it at random other needless junctures during the game).
I personally don’t know how this amps anyone up, but after hearing it twice too many times, tough guy Brandon Bollig used his hands in a different way than the Hawks are used to from him. That is, he scored a goal and equalized the game. Worth noting, this is Bollig‘s first NHL goal so big congrats to him for getting it during the Playoffs!
The celebrations were quickly overshadowed when almost directly after the goal, another instance of contact with Goalie Mike Smith was made – this time by rookie Andrew Shaw. Shaw was trying to get at the puck behind the net. Mike Smith was back there and the two collided while simultaneously trying to get a stick on it. Shaw‘s shoulder made contact with Smith‘s face and Smith immediately dove to the ice and made it seem like he was too hurt to continue. He must have taken acting lessons from David Caruso, because he oversold it and the referees did not think twice about ejecting Shaw and giving the Blackhawks a 5 minute penalty for Charging.

Smith did not leave the ice for even a second and he was suddenly fine after the call was made . I do not necessarily think he was pretending to be hurt, but it is my belief that he exaggerated. Shaw is 5’10 and weighs 175 lbs. Smith is 6’4 and 218 lbs. I’m no theater expert but simple math and common sense dictates that Smith deserves some sort of prize for that performance (Shaw will have a hearing with the NHL for misconduct tomorrow).
If that wasn’t enough drama, the game got even more interesting after the Coyotes took the lead, 3-2. The Blackhawks juggled lines and desperately tried to equalize while Goalie Corey Crawford breathed life back into some nearly heart-stopping instances. Just when the texts started pouring in from my friends chirping me that the Blackhawks were done, Patrick Sharp scored with a mere 5.5 seconds left.
You have to see it to believe it:
Unreal. This skin-of-their-teeth goal tied the game at 3′s and gave the Hawks a chance to claim victory in OT. Bryan Bickell, answered the call of duty and capitalized on the Coyotes’ tired Defense which gave the Blackhawks the well-deserved win. Final score: CHI 4, PHX 3 (OT).
After that kind of craziness, it was obvious that some Blackhawks trends would emerge in the Twitter-sphere (albeit, alongside the fascinating trend about the collective frustration of Jonas fans).
And don’t ask me for bet consultations just yet but….
Anyway, the next game will be in Chi-town on Tuesday so we’ll get a nice break from the insidious howling and be reunited with the more sonically-friendly Chelsea Dagger-style goal celebrations soon.
Game time is 8p CT/9p ET.
In the meantime, let your hearts re-regulate a proper beating pattern after last night, rest your voices, get your good luck charms ready, and as always keep the faith. Game 3 is going to be wild!
