Fat’s the way to do it!

A TEAM of budding Kirkcaldy artists won awards in an international competition – in fat sculpting.
The group of four from The Waterfront Restaurant travelled to London with two coming away with medals in the junior section.
Gillian McLaren (23) won bronze for her sculpture of Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice from the film ‘Fantasia’, whilst Dan Croft (17) was given the silver medal for sculpting an Olympic torch bearer.
As well as Gillian and Dan, head chef Evelyn Potts and owner Tom Pratt also submitted entries at the competition which was held in the Olympia conference centre.
Tom, who was formerly a tutor in catering and hospitality at Adam Smith College before retiring last year, has been teaching fat sculpting for 25 years. He said: “The skill began when people used vegetable fat to make carvings for decorations to put on buffet tables at weddings and occasions like that.
“I’ve been teaching fat sculpting for the last 25 years and it’s very enjoyable.”
As well as taking part in the competition the group decided to make most of the trip south.
“We went down for about a week and managed to do some sightseeing too,” said Tom. “We also had dinner at Marco Pierre White’s restaurant which was great!”
The competition had entrants from all over the world so Tom feels very proud of his team’s efforts.
He said: “Some of those involved were artists who do this sort of thing full-time. We were just a little restaurant trying to compete with that so we’re delighted with the medals.
“It’s hard to find the time in between serving customers!”
