‘Fat boy’ Rob Kardashian gasps for breath after working up a sweat on a …

He piled on 50lbs following his split from pop star Rita Ora.

But as Rob Kardashian is discovering it is rather easier to put on weight than it is to lose it.

The chubby reality star was left gasping for breath on Sunday after a gruelling hike left him sweaty and exhausted.

Rob was joined by his workout team as they worked out under the hot sun in Runyon Canyon.

With his red face, sweaty unkempt hair and flustered appearance, it was clear Rob wasn’t in good shape.

While his pals stood nearby waiting for the 25-year-old to recover, he slumped against their car, hands on his knees.

But proving he’s a true Kardashian Rob had a pair of his own brand Arthur George socks on his feet.

Pulled up as far as possible to show off the marijuana leaf logo on the $15 socks, Rob made sure to promote his brand.

And perhaps he is also hoping his weight loss attempts will lead to some future pay packets.

After all, their battles with the flab have certainly proved lucrative for sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney.

Rob is documenting his weight loss attempts on his Twitter feed, jokingly calling himself ‘fat boy’ as he tweets about frequent workouts, healthy meals and inspiring others to join him on his journey.

He’s a true Kardashian: Rob promotes his sock line Arthur George in a $15 pair decoarted with marijuana leaves

He is believed to be embracing a new healthy lifestyle, and is thought to be following the 60 Days of Fitness exercise and healthy eating programme advocated by The Game’s younger brother BWS Byrd.

But
it’s not all dedication, with the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star
also sharing a ten-second video of a display cabinet in a bakery store
on Saturday.

‘This is definitely a dream,’ he tells the camera.

Rob has been single since splitting from Hot Right Now singer Rita Ora late last year.  The pair parted ways on fairly acrimonious terms, with Rob claiming the platinum-haired bombshell had cheated on him with ‘more than 20 dudes’ in an angry Twitter rant.

He later deleted his comment and then attempted to backtrack by belatedly pretending he had not been referring to his most recent ex-girlfriend.

If only! Hilarious 1920s ads for fat soaps that claimed you could ‘wash away …

  • Vintage ads reveal exaggerated claims made by chemists 100 years ago
  • Obesity Soaps and Fat Reducing Soaps were commonly promoted as guaranteeing weight loss
  • Ads claimed users could target specific areas and lose inches

If it worked, it would be the stuff of dreams. A soap that could ‘wash away fat and years of age’ would be the number one beauty product on any woman’s wish list.

Chances are though, such a product will never exist. But according to hilarious ads uncovered from the archives though, not only have the products already been invented, but they were readily available in pharmacies almost 100 years ago.

A Central London company from the 1920s had on sale a soap that it claimed could ‘reduce any part of the body desired without affecting other parts.’

If only! A 1920s advert from a Central London store claims users can 'wash away fat and years of age' with La-Mar reducing Soap. 'Acts like magic in reducing double chin and ungainly ankle,' it says

‘The new discovery. results quick and amazing,’ ads for the so-called Reducing Soap said.

‘No dieting or exercising. Be as slim
as you wish. Acts like magic in reducing double chin, abdomen, ungainly
ankle, unbecoming wrists, arms and shoulders, large busts, or any
superfluous fat on body.’

The firm said the product, which cost 2/ a cake or three for 4/, came with satisfaction guaranteed – or your money back.

Whether or not any customers took them up on that offer will remain a mystery – but the fact that the miracle Reducing Soap is no longer in production is a good indicator that it wasn’t as genuinely effective as it promised.

Big claims: 'Fat is folly', screams one advert, which claims the La Parle Obesity Soap can reduce fat without 'dieting or gymnastics'

Over the other side of the pond, La
Parle were punting their Obesity Soap, a remarkable product that they
claim, when used like an ordinary soap, ‘positively reduces fat without
dieting or gymnastics.

‘Absolutely harmless. Never fails to reduce flesh when directions are followed,’ it says.

Amen to that – and for just $2 for two cakes.

As for Dr Paul Bouchaud’s Fat
Reducing Soap, well, what woman – or man – wouldn’t kill for its
slimming properties? The product claims to be able to absorb fatty
tissues from ‘all over the body.’

Mr Bouchaud’s Fat Reducing Soap has already ‘made thousands of overburdened folk happy,’ the advert claims.

‘All unhealthy flabbiness of muscles
regain new life under the influence of this specially compounded
flesh-reducing soap,’ the ad goes on to say, promising to make unwanted
fat a ‘thing of the past.’

Fat chance of that.

Big Fat Quiz Of The Year 2012: Channel 4 board refuses to respond to viewers' fury over obscene quiz

  • Television watchdog received at least 140 complaints about quiz’s content
  • Ofcom under pressure to investigate why programme aired during holidays
  • Both Channel 4 and members of the board have so far refused to comment

Channel 4 executives last night stubbornly refused to break their silence on the Big Fat Quiz Of The Year 2012 controversy – despite more than 240 complaints from viewers appalled by its obscene jokes.

The comedy panel show featured countless vile sexual slurs from the comedian Jack Whitehall and the actor James Corden just minutes after the 9pm watershed on Sunday.

Egged on by Jonathan Ross, the pair swigged red wine as they made obscene comments about the Queen, sprinter Usain Bolt, President Obama and singer Susan Boyle.

Television watchdog Ofcom yesterday confirmed it had received at least 140 complaints about the quiz’s lewd content and C4 said it had received another 100.

It means Ofcom is coming under increased pressure to launch an investigation into why C4 bosses allowed the pre-recorded show to be broadcast at primetime during the Christmas holidays.

Despite the deluge of criticism, C4 has refused to comment on the furore but it confirmed an uncensored repeat will be aired tonight.

Members of the broadcaster’s non-executive board – who are appointed as overseers by Ofcom – have also remained silent.

President Obama was also a victim of cruel jokes

Only one board member, Mark Price, responded to the Daily Mail’s requests for a comment, saying only that it was not up to the board to make ‘creative’ decisions.

The C4 press office last night said its board members would not be making any comment. It repeated a request for us not to contact its chairman Lord Burns and said its chief executive David Abraham was still on holiday in Vietnam.

The only comment C4 would make was one issued on New Year’s Eve which said: ‘Big Fat Quiz Of The Year is a well-established comedic and satirical review of the year’s events with well-known guests and was broadcast after the watershed with appropriate warnings.’

Last night Conservative MP Conor Burns, a member of the Commons culture select committee, said: ‘The number of complaints speaks to the fact that the British public think that obscene jokes, not least about members of the Royal Family, are unacceptable. The management at Channel 4 … need to be reminded that there are standards of behaviour that are required from public broadcasters. Channel 4 is in receipt of public money so it needs to be accountable to public opinion.’

Ofcom is likely to consider an investigation into the broadcast because much of the crude content came so soon after the 9pm watershed.

A media source said: ‘Ofcom has warned in the past that there should not be an abrupt change in content after 9pm. It has said it is a “watershed not a waterfall” and consideration should be given to that.’

This is getting absolutely ridiculous now! It is a COMEDY show! Before DM wrote this ‘story’ there was only a few complaints, but since this and god knows how many other articles have been written by DM on this matter, surprisingly the amount of complaints have risen. People are only complaining because DM is sensationalizing the story. Get over it DM and get over it you people who are complaining, it’s comedy and not meant to be taken seriously, if you haven’t watched or then really you can’t complain, and if you didn’t want to watch you could have switched the channel, It’s getting boring now!!

Your comments: I don’t care how many DM readers think that programme was hilarious. It was obscene and shows to what depthsChannel 4 has plummeted. The quality of its programmes has progressively deteriorated. The fact that so many members of the general public condone and enjoy these programmes really disappoints me.

Okay, so whilst I dont condone the jokes on the tv programme (yes, I have seen it and was not offended), knowing the comedians due to appear, surely if you easily take offence or don’t like swearing or jokes of a sexual nature, don’t watch it. It infuriates me when the pc brigade moan about a tv programme, yet they aren’t forced to view it. And as for the watershed, it’s there for a reason, this programme was aired after the watershed, however close to it. So if you’re allowing minors to watch comedy programmes after this time, than more fool you.

has the DM never heard the expression about one man’s meat being another man’s poison? In a free society we can make or own decisions on what we want to watch or not as long as it is not illegal. My aunt absolutely hates people using the expression ‘Oh my God’ all the time on TV but realises that complaining will have little effect and so switches off programmes that offend her (I think that ‘I’m a celebrity…’ was the latest)’. That was her choice and she wouldn’t want to impose similar values on anyone else.

Jack Whitehall made crude remarks about the Queen

I have now had to make a complaint against your paper as you seem to do not know when to stop a vendetta against this show. You have made a story out of a few complaints, that I am sure have grown not from people watching the show but from reading your article.

‘I’m not going to be the fat bird in the pictures this new year’: Mother and …

11:23 EST, 28 December 2012

A mother and daughter have dropped an impressive 16 stone between them over the last 12 months and are now looking forward to a healthier and happier 2013.

The pair embarked on a mammoth weight-loss regime after Charlotte reached her lowest point – fearing she may get stuck in turnstiles at a theme park – and are now both svelte size 10s.

One year ago Charlotte Fletcher, 27, tipped the scales at more than 21 stone while her mother Sarah, 48, from Lostock Hall, Lancashire, weighed in at more than 17 stone.

Total transformation: Sarah Fletcher (left) has lost 6st 13lbs, and daughter Charlotte has dropped over 9 stone

Charlotte, who was a size 28 at her largest, is mother to seven-year-old Jake, and cites her desire to set a healthy example as one of the key motivators behind her weight loss

She said: ‘Primarily my reason for losing weight was for Jake. I couldn’t do anything with him because I was too self-conscious to be running around a playground.

‘I thought, I’m in my 20s and these
should be the years that you remember but I wasn’t doing anything. I’d
never take Jake to a theme park or a football match because I’d panic
about what would happen if I got stuck in the turnstile or they had to
let me in through a special door.

‘It was silly things like not taking him on rides in case they couldn’t shut the door or do up the belts.

‘I didn’t want to be the fat mum in the playground because kids can be so cruel.’

Charlotte, an NHS administrator, says her weight gain began she split from Jake’s dad when their son was just one year old.

She said: ‘I completely isolated
myself and just piled on loads of weight. Once Jake and I moved out
from my parents when he was two, I cut myself off from my friends.

‘They’d call me and say about going out but I always made excuses.’

She has now lost 9st 1lb while her mother Sarah has lost 6st 13lbs.

Charlotte said: ‘Once I was losing weight Jake realised the difference. When he gives me a hug he says “gosh mum, I can get my arms all the way round you now”.’

The pair joined the LighterLife Weight Loss Management programme in Euxton near Chorley, where ordinary eating is replaced by four specially-formulated food packs per day alongside weekly counselling sessions.

Her mum Sarah, a fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care, said: ‘We both started LighterLife in January because we got to the stage where we really needed to do something about it.

‘We were eating lots of convenience food and takeaways, and then bags of sweets would come out.

‘It’s just about being more sensible and not eating things for the sake of it.

‘I’ll definitely be looking for a little black number for my New Year party.

‘I’m not going to be the fat bird in the pictures this year!’

An additional benefit of losing the weight was being able to sell their old clothes on eBay: the women raised £1,400 between them by auctioning their plus-sized outfits.

The ‘healthy’ cereal bars that contain more sugar than a can of cola and as …

Cereal bars are not the healthy snack so many thought they were

Cereal bars are not the healthy snack so many thought they were

The image of cereal bars as a healthy snack is a myth, with some containing the equivalent of almost four teaspoons of sugar and high levels of fat, say researchers.

All but one of the 30 leading bars are high in sugar with 16 containing more than 30 per cent.

The research comes after figures revealed how sales of traditional breakfast cereals have plummeted as people turn to snacks which can be eaten on the go or as part of an office ‘deskfast’.

The research by Which? found the  Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Elevenses Raisin Bake bar contained nearly four teaspoons of sugar (18g), which is more than that found in a small 150ml can of cola (15.9g) and around 20 per cent of the recommended daily allowance.

However, it has less sugar in it than richer breakfast options, for example a Sainsbury’s blueberry muffin which contains 22.7g and a serving of Starbucks luxury fruit bread which contains 39g.

The Tracker Roasted Nut bar was found to be almost a third fat and contained some hydrogenated fat which is a particular risk in terms of increasing cholesterol in the blood.

Monster Puffs, a cereal bar aimed at children and described as ‘great for your lunchbox’, contained 43.5 per cent sugar.

In all, six out of seven cereal bars aimed at children were high in saturated fat.

Which? compared the nutritional content of the bars using the manufacturers’ information and applied traffic light labelling standards to see if the levels of fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt were high, medium or low.

The Nakd Apple Pie was the only bar in
the study that did not contain any added sugar, while the Alpen Light
Apple and Sultana bar was the only one to have three green traffic
lights for fat, saturated fat and salt.

snacks for a sweet tooth

The Weetabix Oaty Strawberry Crusher bar was the healthiest choice for children, with a low salt content and medium levels of fat and saturated fat.

Which? executive director  Richard Lloyd said: ‘People often choose cereal bars in the belief they’re healthier than chocolate or biscuits but our research shows this can be a myth.

‘Manufacturers need to be much clearer about how much sugar, fat and calories are loaded into each bar so people can make an informed choice.

‘We want all foods to have the traffic light colour coding system so people can see easily what they’re eating and giving to their children.’

However, Kellogg’s insisted its bars are healthier than many other alternative snacks.

Spokesman Paul Wheeler said: ‘We’re confused as to why anyone would call a Nutri-Grain Elevenses snack a cereal bar.

‘It’s a baked bar and looks and eats much more like a muffin or cake… and we market it as a mid-morning snack.

‘In fact, compared to other similar mid-morning snacks, it’s one of the choices that has slightly less sugar than the norm.’

Perhaps if home economics or decent food education wasnt scrapped in favour of food tech – (or rather how to do varying pasta dishes and cakes in the case of my older daughter) we wouldnt have such a problem with obesity and individuals could make informed decisions about what they fuel their bodies with instead of blindly buying into the idea of something being ‘healthy’ or good for you when it isnt.

This may be old news but children are still allowed to take them to school as a “healthy” snack instead of fruit. But they aren’t allowed to take homemade flapjack or cake (which has much less sugar)!!

These types of articles surface very so often and denounce ‘healthy’ foods. There was one not long ago about the sugar in smoothies. It’s not hard to read labels and maybe the good thing about these articles is that people now will. Anyone on weight watchers or slimmers world will not touch these things for love nor money because they are overly calorific for what they are. Not news DM but ta.

Those bars are very expensive also IMPO.

These cereal bars are ‘cerealsly’ unhealthy.

….and the new part of this news is what? This has been known for years! Please, DM, stop the nonsense reports.

do people not read the information on the packet, surely common sense
- shaz2602, Glocs UK, 18/8/2012 02:47… I totally agree and I am one who does read labels and like you knows without really having to read labels, however many labels have smaller print than a government budget document. Mothers being harrassed by kids etc. Traffic light labels are a MUST

One of my sone took to having one of these so called “healthy” bars for breakfast each day. They became habit forming. Within a year he had lost all of his back teeth.

This is terribly, terribly old news.

Fat wears a bit thin

Could you fall in love with a fatty? Maybe you already have, in which case the play Fat Pig could annoy you intensely.

If you’re a fatty yourself, you may sigh in recognition when it inevitably concludes that the majority of people stick to their own type and break socially acceptable norms at their peril.

Neil LaBute explores the issue, drawing on the single question of whether a good-looking thin guy, Tom (Colin Moss), can get it on with the lively, likeable but large Helen (Chanelle de Jager).

That one issue is spun out for almost two hours as Tom finds himself falling for Helen, but never in public, only in private.

He’s embarrassed to be seen with her, and takes flak from his well-groomed but vicious-tongued colleague Carter and uber-bitch Jeannie, a blonde Barbie with whom Tom is supposedly having a fling.

Yet at the end I couldn’t see why this American creation has become an award-winning show. For a comedy it’s not particularly funny, and it’s all rather overplayed.

Moss is very comfortable playing the uncomfortable Tom, who puts his foot in it repeatedly with Helen as they skirt around the elephant in the room. He wants to be with her, but can’t stand up to the taunts and snide remarks from others that dent his own self-esteem.

De Jager carries her role well, with the script perhaps exposing the lie that fat people tell themselves. Helen insists she is okay with her body image, yet constantly needles Tom about his feelings towards her, as she is ever fearful of rejection.

I don’t think I’ve seen any production where a fat character is truly at ease with themselves, and how can they be, the play implies, when the acceptable standard is slim.

LaBute intended his play to tackle issues of body image and how people conform to avoid challenging social norms. For me the sadder message is that people will deprive themselves of what they really want in order to remain socially acceptable, which is a sadder reflection on humanity than the more obvious message that fat is still considered gross, even in this age of lardy-arses.

One flaw is the lack of witty repartee in what should be an issue with plenty of meaty humour. But a greater weakness is that LaBute has created a cast of caricatures rather than characters. The action flows as speedily as possible, so it feels like the script rather than the actors or direction is at fault.

Maybe the lines would have sounded funnier or the issues been more provocatively interesting given a different delivery, but I doubt it.

Jeannie is a truly dreadful role and, though Lee-Anne Summers gives her all, she is unconvincing. Surely no woman would be so demeaningly dense, spiteful and undignified when what is clearly a non-starter of a relationship fizzles out?

Jeannie is the stereotypical office bitch, as imagined by a man. “I really like you,” Tom tells her at one stage, which is the least plausible of all the lines. Why would he, when there’s absolutely nothing to like?

LaBute clearly makes Helen the far nicer women, to emphasise how we judge people’s value based on appearances, not personality.

Clayton Boyd as Carter gets some of the best lines, but again he’s a stereotype of a potential playboy mixed with lingering teenager in his juvenile attitudes.

The stage set is crowded but effective, serving as three separate areas for the interaction. But it’s a simple issue really. Fat is bad, thin is in. And you either have the guts to go against that or you don’t.

LaBute gives us several angles of the same issue, but by the second act the fat is wearing thin. DM

Fat Pig runs at Sandton’s Old Mutual Theatre until 5 May 2012.
